The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Thursday that Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) is set to direct a holiday comedy based on a pitch from Freckle Films, Jessica Chastain’s production company. Chastain will also be starring in the still-untitled holiday comedy that follows two women who fight the elements to make it home in time for Christmas. Co-starring alongside Chastain is Octavia Spencer. The script will be penned by Peter Chiarelli.
The project first made headlines when during a Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s “Women Breaking Barriers” at the Sundance Film Festival in January Spencer spoke about how she and Chastain got to talking about pay equity.
Spencer told Chastain, “women of color on that spectrum, we make far less than white women. So, if we’re gonna have that conversation about pay equity, we gotta bring the women of color to the table.’ And I told her my story, and we talked numbers, and she was quiet, and she said she had no idea that that’s what it was like for women of color.” The two then planned to negotiate their pay on the film together in order to make the same amount. This female peer-couple ended up making five times what they asked for.
